Zaha Hadid Foundation, London
Commissioned as part of the Architecture Foundation’s Post Press series, Three Sisters on Greenway Close is an exploration of how creative performance work is made in the contemporary city. Part installation, part screening, part performance, the project is a collaboration between Mia Hull and Sylvie Field (direction, performance, film) and Medium (scenography).
An adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s Three Sisters, the play was rehearsed as a theatrical piece over six weeks in Autumn 2025, and then shot over the course of two days in Hull and Field’s North London flat, with nine performers and nine crew. The project sits suggestively between theatre and film, reenactment and reality, rehearsal and happening.
Medium has designed and built a scenography for the event that sits somewhere between the private home, theatre and cinema. This immersive and adaptive scenography unfolds, as the film does, across its four acts. This begins as a 1:1 scale model of the wall against which the film was shot. As the event begins, the projection is mapped onto the wall, making sense of its flattened perspective. Through the next three acts, this wall is gradually dismantled and stretched flat as it shifts from stage set to projection screen; a door closes; skirtings and architraves are stripped away; wall and floor panels are removed. For the film’s final act, the audience are led outside to a screen in the courtyard, mirroring the film’s shift from the theatrical to the cinematic.
Built from materials salvaged from an immersive theatre set at the National Theatre (sourced from Tipping Point East), the scenography is wrapped and painted in scrim fabric of various weaves, acting as stage set, projection screen and architectural object in its own right.
